Thanksgiving in Denmark
In the restaurant world, family meals signifies either the calm before the storm or the clearing once outside the weeds. In architecture, we don’t do that enough to celebrate just making it in an unforgiving field.
I got the opportunity to cook a “traditional” Thanksgiving meal for my Danish coworkers at EFFEKT. While Thanksgiving is problematic in its whitewashing of history and glossing over the genocide (jennas-side.com) that occurred to the native people so we could then steal their land…
One thing that I think Thanksgiving does give Americans though, is not just making December a non-working month, but choosing to celebrate a meal with friends and family. It shouldn’t be a surprise that I grossly prefer celebrating Friendsgiving.
This year, I’m thankful for the opportunity to just be in Copenhagen, I’m thankful that I made it to 30, and I’m thankful for being able to cook the full spread of a traditional Thanksgiving meal and watching the European mind unable to comprehend how we make this a holiday every year.
To this special dinner thank you, Ate, Celeste, Fabian, Nanna, Ola, Olivia, Sam, Sophie, and Tina. Miss you all!
